The Return of the Purity Ceremony

Updated: May 17

A Sacred Space for Women Entering a New Season

It’s hard to believe this is year nine of Purity + Peace.

What started as a small group Bible study has now reached countless women, meeting in living rooms filled with laughter and tears, in church halls after long workdays, and yes, even through late-night Zoom calls during the height of the pandemic. Still, one sacred element that first emerged in 2016 has always held a tender place in our hearts: the Purity Ceremony.

If you were raised in church like I was, you know the weight of “purity culture.” I remember the rings, the pledges, the ceremonies we attended as teens, wide-eyed and sincere. But then life happened. And many of us, in one way or another, failed to meet the unreachable standard we had vowed to uphold. And when we fell short, the silence was deafening. There was no space to come back, no follow-up for the brokenhearted woman sitting quietly in the back pew, still carrying shame at 26, 32, 40 years old.

Purity + Peace was created for her.

This is for the woman who still believes in the holiness of God but wonders if she’s missed her chance to be “pure.”

This is for the woman who’s lived through heartbreak, regret, or just plain weariness.

The woman who wants peace with her past and purity in her future, not perfection, but alignment... wholeness... redemption.

When I first shared my story of redemption with our early P+P group, I was met with the unexpected. One woman said, “I’d love to take a purity vow to the Lord.” Then another said, “Me too.” To be honest, I was skeptical. Most purity curricula were geared toward teens. The idea of a Purity Ceremony for grown women felt… odd. Maybe even a little silly.

But then I prayed.

This is what God revealed and highlighted to me: these women had opened their hearts wide through this study. They had confessed, grieved, healed, and grown. They didn’t need a lecture, they needed a moment. A moment of restoration, dignity, and public declaration that their story wasn’t over, but it was time to start over, and that God’s standard was still good, and His grace was even better.

So, in the tiny social hall of our church’s smallest campus, we held our very first Purity Ceremony. I pulled out my old wedding decorations, strung patio lights across the intimate social hall ceiling, and asked God to set an atmosphere of healing and peace. The women dressed up, bought rings or necklaces to symbolize their commitment, and stood tall before the Lord and their loved ones. My pastor gave us the green light. I gave them my heart. And God gave us His Spirit.

It was powerful.

We’ve done a few since then, but our last one was just before COVID… and now, after five long years, the Purity Ceremony is returning.
